Hi,
Running SuSe 9.0 pro under command line prompts. When I type: edit [filename]
then after I'm done typing how to I save it?Kind of new to this.

to save the file in command line mode first type ":" it means to go out of insert mode[means now you can't type] if still you waana type press "i" this will go to again insert mode[typing mode] now u wanna save the file. type ":wq"[means write and quit] in case you dont want to save the file only quit type. ";q" but if the file is only readonly u gotta type ":q!" for without saving but quit.

Are you telling me that "edit" is the same as "vi"??? Somehow, I don't have "edit" on my system, Fedora Core 1, so it must be an extra app under SUSE then... Maybe "pico" would be a little easier to use if your system has it since you can see all the commands at the bottom of the screen. To me, everyone needs to know how to use vi if you use a Unix system!!!

And don't forget, you have to first press escape, before ":" or "wq".
Basically, some installations of vim have the programs "vi, vim, gvim, xvim, edit, view". view opens the file read-only, gvim and xvim are the X and GTK+ versions. On some systems "vi" is only with basic features and "vim" with all features, on others both are same or are symlinks.
