dvd's in linux

I am running Redhat 7.3 on a P3-1ghz w/ a g-force2 card and a pioneer 16x dvd-rom drive.
I can play dvd's using mplayer, xine, and ogle but they all have the same problem. Every second or so the video pauses, skips a few frames, then goes on. Does anyone know how to get rid of this?
