If you already have win98se installed on your computer, chances are your whole disk is dedicated to a FAT32 (or possibly FAT16) filesystem. Linux cannot install on this type of filesystem. You will need to partition your disk with a linux partition. Since your disk is probably all allocated already to FAT32 (or FAT16), you may be able to use Partition Magic (which can be purchased at any computer software store these days for about $30 or so) or the DOS utility called FIPS, which is free. FIPS may destroy your data, so make sure you backup ANY data you deem worthy. Search the web for proper usage of FIPS. If you want to start brand new which is cleaner, as I did after backing up my disk, post a message, and I'll give you instructions on how to do this.

Amen to yuckmouth's reply above. Even better than setting up a separate partition is to throw in an older hard drive. A 6Gb HDD is more than enough to hold everything Mandrake-Linux 8.1 has, and you will still have access to the FAT partition contents. The installation program will format the partitions on the new drive for you (use the Expert Mode). I'm a complete screw-up and even I managed to install Man-Linux 8.1 so it works. Hey, even the Apache web server comes up alive and running. Good luck.
