Comment:

I have my system set up with SuSE 9.0 on
the master and Win XP on the slave. GRUB
is in the MBR (I think). I want to be able
to dual boot the system using grub, but I
can't seem to figure it out. I've tried
editing menu.1st and grub.conf, but nothing
seems to work out. Here is what they both
look like at this point:

menu.1st

title Linux
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/
hda2 vga=0x317 splash=silent desktop
hdc=ide-scsi hdclun=0 showopts
initrd (hd0,1)/boot/initrd

title WinXP
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
chainloader +1
makeactive
boot

grub.conf

root (hd0,1)
install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/
grub/stage1 d (hd0) /boot/grub/stage2
0x8000 (hd0,1)/boot/grub/menu.lst
title WinXP
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
chainloader +1

quit

One thing that I just noticed and am going
to try on reboot is that I just added the
second drive (XP drive) to my device.map
file. If it doesn't work, I need help.
I'm sick of switching the primary boot
device in the BIOS at startup.

Well, nevermind, I figured it out. I
realized that I needed to remap the drives
in menu.1st. Now it looks like this:

title Linux
blah blah

title WinXP
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd1)
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
chainloader +1
makeactive
boot

Good thing I'm just a newbie!

Even though you are new, that's actually good documentation. I've never run across that particular question before.

I am trying to do the same thing but I can't get it to work. I think I followed all of your suggestions. What can I be missing? Can you tell me what you put in device.map file?

Using Suse 9.0 as master with WinXP on slave.

Thanks,
Michael

I installed SUSE 9.0 on the same drive as my windows XP that I want to dual boot with. I get a GRUB Geom Error. I can get into SUSE by using the disk, but I can not get into windows and I am a newbie when it comes to Linux, at least on the personal use side. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx
