dual boot Windows linux and xp

Absolutely. What distro if Linux would you want? I would recommend Ubuntu since it is prob the easiest to "play" with. You can do this a number of ways. 1st you have to have a boot CD. You can get that 2 ways. one is go to Ubuntu.com and download the ISO image and burn it to a cd. second is ask them to send you a cd. either way its free.
Once you have the CD Boot from it and chose install Ubuntu. Once you are in the OS you go to System>Administration> Partition Editor ( maybe Gparted Not for sure anymore) chose that and then select the amount of Space you want to give Ubuntu. Most people start with around 5-10GB. I personally have it split with XP. Up to you. then you allow it to defrag and change the partition sizes and then it will install. You then set some preferences and the it will reboot and you will have GRUB loader come up and it will have your choices of Ubuntu, Ubuntu safe mode, Memtest86.
