Comment: I am a novice RH guy. I have two hard drives one dedicated to WinME and one to install RH 7.1. I am trying to install RH on the second drive via the downloaded iso files (Do not have a CD Burnner). I created a Linux boot disk with the rawrite but if I boot with that disk in I never get into the installation process once the boot: comes up. I have tried different install modes but nothing works. I have PartitionMagic 6.0 and have partitioned the Linux disk into a 1G SWAP and 6G Primary and 20G Extended. I also have BootMagic but I really can not get these tools to help me. Realy not sure how I am ever going to mount these iso disk files in order to run them if they are sitting in the windows environment on one drive and needed on the other. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Reply: (edit)Well you cant install from the iso files its not possible as far as I know. I have ISOs for RH7.1 and Mandrake 8.0 and I would be glad to send burn and send you a copy. Other wise you will need to get download the installation files or I think there are programs that can reconstruct them from the iso without burning to cd but I can't think of one because I've never needed to do so. Also 1 Gig of swap is probably way way to much. Linux uses memory much better that windows. I have 192 MB of ram and I've never seen Linux use any swap at all. If you have linux on a second hard drive it will not likely be bootable. You need to use Partition Magic and resize your Windows parition so that there is about 16 MB of free space at the begining of the drive. Use this space to create an ex2 partition, then if you have a swap and another large ex2 partition on the secound drive your good to go. Both RH and Mandrake have good graphical bootloaders so I wouldn't bother with Boot Magic. When you install linux you'll need to specify mount points for your partitions. The small partition at the begining of you primary drive needs to be "/boot" then you main linux partition on the secondary drive will be "/" . If you want to see your windows partitions under RedHat you need to specify a mount point for your windows partition "/mnt/win_C", mandrake does this automatically, Durring the install RedHat will ask you where you want to install Lilo, you should select the Master Boot Record after installation is complete you see a graphical bootloader that will allow you to chose windows or linux. Hope this helps, If you want the CDs email me an address. I get blank cd's cheep and I don't mind paying a little postage to help promote propagation of Linux so don't worry about sending any money. Reply: (edit)Quite on the contrary, as far as the installation of RH 7.1 is concerned: you should be able to install the system using the ISO image and you won't be able to do this by using the extracted or downloaded directory tree. Why it's not working for you I don't know, as I decided to pass on RH 7.1 myself, mainly because ISO image is too much for me to download with my connection speeds... Make sure that you follow all the installation instructions, that your ISO image isn't corrupted and, perhaps, that you are using the correct boot disk. Or, better yet, use the installation CD's you've been offered -- if someone offered me Mandrake 8.0 I would gladly accept! ;) Good luck

Reply: (edit)This is the way you check if an iso is valid after using mkisofs: mount -t iso9660 dev=/dev/loop0 redhat.iso /cdrom I think I think. I can't get into my home computer to check. It's refusing telnet. You need loopback device support, though. I don't know if your boot disks can handle that. It's mounted like any CD-ROM and doesn't matter what file system it's saved under (I used FAT to mount the mandrake 8 iso and it worked fine.) If you can get the iso mounted, you'll have no problems.

Reply: (edit)I dont konw if this is posible, but heres a suggestion firstly using partition magic, make sure the drive for Ret Hat is "visible", make it an extended partition temporarily (trust me) Download ISO Buster. extract the iso with buster to the partition you want as your primary Red Hat Drive. Using partition Magic again convert the drive to primary, and hidden, (as far as I know, win me doesn't allow more than 1 visible primary partitions.) using bootmagic, select your two primary drives to boot from and then you can boot from your primary RH partition. The extracted ISO is the same as a bootable CD (I Think!) Good luck, Email me if I am being an ignorant idiot, or if it is remotly close to working, either way. See Ya Steve Cole
