I am a newbie to linux kubuntu. I installed kubuntu on my laptop and then windows XP. Kubuntu was working properly while it was single in my laptop. After installing windows, kubuntu disappeared from booting and only windows boot.
I tried to find grub on /sbin/grub. grub is not found. So I think, i did not installed grub in the beginning. I try to install again by using following command
/sbin/grub-install /dev/hda1
result is permission denied.
If anyone has experience on this problem or knowledge about it, please help me with your idea. Thanks alot

I can assure you I have trashed more than one MBR.
Plenty of pages on that subject.
http://www.google.com/search?q=inst...I like to use boot managers that are a bit more easy to configure but grub is powerful.
I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

When dual installing windoze & Linux on the same box, you must install windoze first as it completely overwrites the MBR which is why kubuntu won't boot.
Linux is much more friendly and adds the bootloader of any existing OS to it's boot menu so you can dual-boot but you must install Linux using the Custom Partioning option or it will overwrite the MBR
Your best option now is to re-install kubuntu using the upgrade option and then it should dual-boot.

Thank you for your information and suggestions. I have re-formatted, re partition my HDD. This time, I installed Windows XP first and successfully installed XP. Then I install Kubuntu. At certain step, after seeing a blue screen backgroud, I got an error message "Error-KDesktop,"The process for the file protocol died unexpectedly."
and my computer does not response properly, but CD rom keep on reading data. But I cannot see "Install Kubuntu" icon on the desktop to install it.I can see only a blue screen. Please let me know how to fix it.Thank you so much for your suggestions.

It seems that kubuntu has a problem with your video card. 1 of the problems with kubuntu is that it does not install directly but runs "live" from the cd and then offers you the option of installing to hard disk so if there is a problem with the video card you cannot install.
You mentioned that you originally installed kubuntu ok so it seems that it should work with your video card.
When you had the problem, were you running windoze and then trying to run the cd from within windoze ? It may be that windoze had the video in a state that kubuntu could not handle. Try booting from the cd from a cold start.
You could also try the ubuntu website to see if it has a user forum where some has had similar problems and found a resolution.

There is also an alternative CD image for each Ubuntu flavor. This alternative image makes a bootable installation disk. I used it to install Kubuntu a few versions back and found it to include a wider option set than the live CD installer. I do not know if it will help with this issue, but it may be worth a try.

Hi phil1949
Thank you for your information again. I installed Kubuntu from a cold start, by using boot kubuntu. It boot and ask to select an option to install. I did not install from windows.
Yes, most of the comments shows video card or low memory. But I have successfully installed Kubuntu on this machine but no windows installed at that time.I found this problme after installing windows because I want to use dual OS.

Not sure what is going on here. My experience of installing kubuntu (or any other Linux distro) is to install windoze & then linux (you must use the "custom" install option) and the bootloader, either grub or lilo which is manually selected during the install process sets up a boot menu so you can choose whether to boot into windoze or linux.
My machine currently has Windows 2000, Mandriva 2007.0 & kubuntu 7.04 installed no problem
