External DSL modem, LAN card, configured in network wizard, was "sucessfull" but still will not connect. Dual boot Mandrake-Linux8.1/Windows Me. Where can I find the info (within Windows) from my ISP to use to setup my DSL. Such as DNS and xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Any help is appreciated, itmdtr

Depending on what version of windows you have, you can either run ipconfig, or winipcfg and find out some info. If you have windows 9x then click start then run and type in winipcfg. If you have 2k or XP go to start/run and type in "command" when the command prompt comes up type in "ipconfig" or "ipconfig -all" and get information on stuff. If you want go into your control panel and see if you are setup to obtain and IP automatically and if are obtaining your DNS servers automatically too (i would assume you are w/ DSL, but it varies by provider). Anyway, with that information you should be able to setup your connection. Regardles of your provider, you should be able to conifgure you linux box to use your internet connection. There is something wrong if you can't, and it is able to be fixed. hth and mail me if you respost with more information so i can reread.

Just a comment about the last reply. On Win2k, or XP, you must type "cmd", and not "comand" to access to the DOS command prompt.

Summary: PPPoE has nothing to do with a static IP, so don't bother. You can get a dynamic IP with non-PPPoE, and you could theoretically get a static one with PPPoE, although I've never heard of that. Linux ha...
