I use Mandriva Linux here, so I do not know
much about the Suse System Management
Software. IIRC, YAST is the main tool,
similar to the Windows XP Control Center.
It should have a network configuration
tool. You should be able to use it to set
up your network connection.Since you have a linksys router between
your computer and the dsl modem, the router
handles the PPPoE protocol for you. The
only thing you have to worry about is
connecting the computer to the router, so
keep it simple :). I will assume this is
NOT a wireless connection.Set up a standard network connection to the
router using DHCP configuration. The
Linksys router will have a LAN IP address
of 192.168.1.1 (also your gateway
address). Your host name can be anything
you want it to be (your Linksys router does
not care what it is). If you do not have a
specific name in mind, you can simply use
computer. To connect using DHCP, you may need to
install a DHCP client package. I do not
know if the network configuration tool will
install it for you.If you can not make your connection work
with DHCP, you can set up a static IP
address for your computer. To set up a static network connection, you
need:A subnetmask
A Default Geteway address
An IP address
One or more DNS server addresses (usually
two or three)
A hostnameBy default, your Linksys router provides a
standard class C (IPv4) network with a
subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
and is your Default Gateway with a
LAN IP address of 192.168.1.1.Your static IP address can not be
used by any other device connected to the
network, and should fall within the same
subnet as the router 192.168.1.1 -
192.168.1.255.
192.168.1.255 is the broadcast
address and can not be used by any device
connected to the network. When you enabled the router's DHCP service,
you set the number of computers that will
connect to the router. If this number was
three, the DHCP service will assign up to
three IP addresses beginning with
192.168.1.100. Your computer's
static IP address must NOT fall
within that range, which for three computes
is 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.102.If you do not know the DNS server IP
addresses for your ISP, you can get this
information from one of your Windows
computers, or with a partial Linux network
configuration. In Windows XP click Start > Run,
enter cmd and click OK to get
a command prompt. At the prompt, enter
ipconfig /all.In Linux, set up your network connection
temporarily with no DNS server addresses.
Open a WEB browser, and enter
192.168.1.1 then press Enter. In the
Linksys router page, click the status tab.
The DNS server IP addresses obtained by the
router for your Internet connection will be
displayed near the bottom of the page.Set up your network connection again
including the DNS server IP addresses. As with the DHCP configuration, your host
name can be anything you want.HTH,
