As the subject title implies, I want to be able to dual boot Damn Small Linux 3.0.1 with Win95C. Now I've not really had much experience with Linux except for a Red Hat distro I had to install as a part of an old course I did. I tried on my own before hand just playing around with the LiveCD whilst 95 was loaded. I then decided to isntall to the HD.

So I booted up a Debian distro cd I had and made 1 expanded partiton 3 logical after my primary 512 meg Fat 16 partiton. The Logical drives are 512 EXT2 no mount point, 256ish (forget exactly) Swap Partiton and the rest 700ish Fat16 for storage of windows gear.

I then wrote changes. So hda1 fat16, hda5 EXT2,hda6Swapand hda7Fat16. I rebooted the system and checked that windows worked stil and it did (as I said not used Linux distros much). Restarted again and booted from the live cd. Instead of cli'ing the isntall I waited till the system had booted. Then from the internal menu I choose HD install. Choose hda5,multi user login, and then Grub as the start manager. Files were transfered over and restarted the system.

Upon starting Win95 was not found and only DSL was selectable. Started up DSL and then added Root and User passwords (written down, am not a complete 'tard) and then the system started fine. Alot faster then the livevCD on such an oldish machine. Anyway I bloody closed the Xwindows as well and can't bring that back so I'm going to remove all partions and begin again, but I was wanting to know how to either manually enter Win95 into the Grub loader (or Lilo as you can choose either) or how to get the system to do it automatically. As DSL doesn't give much help on dual booting I was wondering if there were any of the users out there who can help me with this problem. Regards Lupin3rd

I'm sure this has been offered on many many web pages.
From what I did a few years ago was to keep the default ms bootloader and while installing linux put the linux loader (at that time lilo) on the linux partition. Almost no distro's let you choose that too easily.

I'm sure grub will load any os but I don't play with it enough to tell you how.

I'd consider fixing the ms install and then fix the linux.

Guess you could even run sort of a zipslack setup with your linux booting from within dos while using fat format. Just make a large zipslack install and copy over the dsl files. Be sure to follow the way zipslack boots from within dos and get the correct name for kernel.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

After I posted this I figured out that I should use Lilo however that involved a restart. I did install Lilo but then wanted to put NT 4 WS onto there as well :P now i can't get rid of Lilo even with the FDSIK /mbr of windows however I have used the cd and not a boot floppy so maybe it doesn't work the same.

Don't remember if 95 had that option /MBR.

Get ranish on a floppy or on ultimate boot cd and fix the mbr. ??

Also there are times when linux/win/linux/win messes up the partition numbering, seems I remember and that borks some other deal either bootloaders or how to assign a partition.

Here is a lilo setup.

I've got all 4 95's both 98's WinME and I tried /mbr from the ME CD :P I know running strange partiton table like that is silly that's why I'm restarting it but I've got to get rid of Lilo which thanks to the links might work :P.

While that info helps interms of what is the /mbr switch and about booting with lilo, but not with removing the damn thing :P. I suppose I could boot the live cd and try and remove it that way.

The new plans for the system are
HDA1 FAT16 Win95C 512MB,

Logical partitons
HDA#5 FAT16 WinNTWS 4-SP6 512MB,
HDA#6 EXT2 Damn Small Linux 3.0.1 512MB,
HDA7 SWAP 256MB,
HDA#8 FAT16 Storage 300(this is rough as I always forget the amount thats left)

I guess it could be possible that your mbr is correct and that the first bootable partition has lilo on it?

That seems likely because I think that's where Lilo will go automatically regardless of whats there. I read that in a page about Lilo. Normally you have to tell it to go onto another partiton during setup :P Personally I would have though that thered be some sort of Util to remove bootloders such as Lilo but then again Linux distros are more about user customization then totalitarian computing regiemes cough*microsoft*cough.

According to the lilo man page, the
following should help:

/sbin/lilo {-u|-U} - uninstall LILO boot
loader
