Hi!
I'm interested in installing LINUX on my system, but I have some dubts: does a driver for Yamaha cdr8424 cd writer exist?
And, if so, what kind of program can I use to burn CD's? Now I have WIN 98 in my PC, and I use Nero burning rom v5: does anyone know if Nero will run on LINUX?
Finally, programs which run on UNIX platforms will run on LINUX too?
Thank you very much for your help!!!

CD-Writers are relatively new hardware, only SCSI CD-Writers are supported by the latest linux kernel. Wait about a good 6 months for a kernel version that would support IDE CDRW's. (There is a way around emulating SCSI with IDE devices to get your IDE CDRW working, but to a Linux Newbie, this could be quite tricky). Well there are quite a few tools and utilities to get your cd-burning going with linux. (cdrecord, mkisofs... etc)

For an application to run on linux, it must be compiled on linux. So an image editor that runs on IRIX will not run on Linux unless it is correctly written as a multi-platform software and is compiled on a linux platform.Note
that most vendor-specific UNIX applications are NOT multi-platform.They are written specifically for the vendor's unix architecture. Most open-source software is available in linux. Also, things that are written in Visual Basic will not run on Linux..:-)

I have RedHat 6.2 already installed and an internal Yamaha CRW8424S drive. How can I begin using it as a recordable CD device?

P.S.: Please cc: replies to jmkatz@ieee.org if possible, thanks.
