I've experimented with several different Linux distros over the past few months, but haven't hit on one yet that I really like. Ubuntu & it's variations came close, but they didn't quite do it for me. A couple of days ago, I read some very favorable reviews about DreamLinux, so I decided to download it & give the LiveCD a try. I liked it so much that I'm gonna format the HDD on one of my older systems & try the full install. This *may* be the one I've been looking for?

If you haven't tried it yet, it's definitely worth a look:

Unfortunately, the full install didn't work as well as I had hoped. Installation itself was simple enough & I had no problems configuring the wireless, but the internet locked up several times & the only way to get it working again was to reboot. I also had problems with the sound configuration. I ended up changing sound cards & got it to work. But after a day & a 1/2 of struggling with it, I decided to go back to Ubuntu. I'm gonna keep my eye on this one though...I think it has potential, but it still needs a little work.

jam,
Have you considered Simply Mepis? You can download / burn ISO and run as Live CD. Installation to HD is simple -- it even formats for you if you dedicate the entire disk. For dual boots on the same HD Simply Mepis has QTParted and / or GParted (depending on the version you download). It is the best Linux distro I've seen for hardware recognition. Check it our here: http://www.mepis.org. I think you'll like it if you give it a try. I use it as my primary OS. Just a thought. Jon

I'd seen Simply Mepis mentioned plenty of times, but when I 1st looked at the download, I saw 4GB+ for the DVD version, so I passed on it. Looking again, I see that there's a single LiveCD with multiple add-on CDs. I downloaded the ISO last nite & burned it to a disc. I'm gonna keep Ubuntu of this older PC for the time being, but I plan on giving the Mepis CD a spin in my "good" PC.

Here's the specs of my Linux test box:

Athlon XP1600+
Asus KT133A board
384GB PC133
GF2 MX 32GB AGP
15GB Maxtor HDD

Thanks for the tip.

That's one of the "problems" with Linux...there are SOOOO many different distros & everyone seems to have their favorite. I had a look at Sam 2007 & as you said, it has great visuals & seems to come with quite a package of goodies. I'm gonna download the ISO later tonite & give it a "real" look. Thanks. :-)

The main problem I've been having is getting my Zyxel wireless card working properly. Ubuntu has no problem with it, but I couldn't get it to work with SAM 2007. Simply Mepis 6.0 wouldn't work with it either, so I uninstalled it & went back to Ubuntu again. But last nite, I saw that Simply Mepis 6.5 was just released & one of the things addressed in the new version is wireless drivers, so I decided to give it another shot. This time, I used a different HDD so that I could keep Ubuntu intact. 6.5 works great...no problem with wireless & seems to run very well. I'm gonna stick with this one for a while but I'm also gonna have a look at PCLinux 2007 when it's released (it's still in beta). SAM 2007 is based on PCLinux. It seems odd that SAM 07 was released before PCL 07?

Hi,

I've been using Ubuntu 6.06 for a while, just trying to get used to Linux. I like Ubuntu a lot, but I've just been looking at SAM 07, looks great!

I assume it's as user-friendly as Ubuntu?

Where can I get a good tutorial or guide to getting started with Linux? I've playing with Ubuntu for a while, but I'm still just guessing.

Actually I've just clicked on Jam's link to DreamLinux2.2, that looks good too. And there seem to to be lots of guides on the webpage.

There are too many to choose from!!

Any advice for a distro that's good to learn on, or should I keep going with Ubuntu?

Sam
