I am preparing to install Kubuntu on an older Compaq. The modem is a PCTEL Platinum V.90 #2 which I understand from boning up on modems, may have a problem with Linux. The only thing I use this Compaq for is running tutorials and learning new programs. It is a guest computer in a peer to peer network. I occasionally use it to connect to the internet to run a tutorial while working on the host computer. Am I going to have a problem trying to put Kubuntu on this machine?
Not sure what you want here, so this is what I'm putting.
Any particular reason why you chose Kubuntu over other distros?
Your PCTEL is a "winmodem". You'd be better off with an external serial port modem or a hardware based internal modem. However, you *may* be able to get yours to work:

Buy an external SERIAL PORT modem if at all possible. Used modems are often available from people upgrading to broadband. Ebay and many computer forums that list parts for sale are good sources. Old US Robotics internal "hardware" modems also work well.
OT BTW: I assume by your nick you might be into casting pewter. If so, congrats on the cool hobby! :)
