ok so i am going to try downloading vector linux (if i can get my connection working that is) but the install instructions say to just create a directory right at "/" download the files right to there and then boot from the floppy and do my install but how do i get my partiton cleared of the currently loaded redhat 7.1? if i partiton the drive i will lose my downloaded data and otherwise i will have both redhat and vector in the same partiton trying to both at once if someone could help me with this i would be very grateful! also since vector is slackware based i would use slackware packages right???

Why not just download the ISOs from
www.linuxiso.org, burn them onto a CD and
install from there?
