top to check the performance of a screensaver... kind of like checking if the light is out when the firdge door is shut.

If were you, I would just turn of the monitor while running the server. I don't know if the screensaver slows your server down, but having your monitor off definetly doesn't slow it down...
dan, ssh into the box an check top (or use telnet if you don't care about security). The screen saver would probably also still start if you're a different user on a virtual terminal.
