I am tired of crashes in Win 98se. Do most of the Windows 9x programs run under Linux (Quickbooks 6) or do the programs have to be written for Linux? What works or does not work together?
Is there a good accounting program to replace Quickbooks 6 in Linux? Any books that simplify Linux similar to "How computers work" book?
I liked DOS programs, especially if they had mouse support. I have to have mouse support.
I still use some of the MSDOS commands to get things done correctly.
I am not a gamer or power user. I use Quickbooks, MS Works 4.5, MP3, and look at a lot of internet sites related to education and computers.
Thanks

There is a finance program, called GNU Cash. It reads standard Quicken Files. You can use Star Office 5.2 in place of Works... and the internet and MP3 are pretty much included in any distro.....
But to actually load up you're Window's Software on a Linux box, well.. it would end up being a large learning curve (Using WINE and/or VMWARE), and could end in more frustration.

I agree with Sourdough. There are Linux equivalents to most Windows programs (and most of them will read their Windows counterpart's files), but your Win apps would have to be rewritten to run natively in Linux. You could use the Windows emulation programs mentioned above, but your computer will take a performance hit doing so.

Using WINE: Install windows completely
on a drive seperate from your linux box
with network,video and sound support
and see what happens. Most applications
that will work with wine always said
that it needed some file or another from
windows to load the program, so I gave it
windows and most anything works that way.
Of course you take a (sometimes huge) hit
on performance. I just started to really
play with it to test what I can get on it.I would rather have a instable enviroment
sitting on a stable one, than always in an
unstable enviroment. And by the way, more and more vendors have
seen the times a'changen'(?) and are
starting to do 'mini ports' over to linux.
Just look at the game market and the business
end will follow.
