hi i have dlink nic in my pc and linux is recognizing it as a realtek nic. When linux boots the interface for the nic fails. I have source code for the Dlink nic driver but i dont know where to put the compiled file and where to make the appropriate entries for the nic.

My SMC NIC uses the Realtek driver (RTL8139), however it does work with it.
In your case, you'll want to put your object file in the directory where the other network drivers are, such as "/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/net/" (That's on Redhat 8, but hopefully you get the idea). Then, in the /etc/modules.conf file, you'll need to change the line "alias eth0 realtek" to "alias eth0 dlink" or whatever its name is.
Good luck.

It may be made by DLink, but have a look at the actual chips on the card for an RTL8139x
The realtek driver should work, you may have to pass it parameters like irq, i/o etc. when initialising the module.
