The easiest way is to press ctrl alt + or ctrl alt - until you reach the desired resolution. The problem is that you will need to redo it every time you restart X.

For a more permanent solution, try running Xconfigurator. It runs in graphical mode, if you can start X, or in text mode if you are starting from a console.

If you really want to do it the complicated way, you can edit /etc/X11/XF86config in a text editor (that's /etc/X11/XF86config-4 for XF4 users). Once you have the file open, you scroll down to the screen section, and change the modes to your liking. This is a complete pain to do, but it builds character.

Good Luck

Greg

Try running XF86config. That is used for XF v 3.
