Xorg is configured to run your display at a frequency that is beyond the hardwares capability (Refresh rate or resolution may be out of range). You can re-configure your Xorg settings. To create a new xorg.conf (Xorg Configuration) file, switch to a console screen (CTRL+ALT+F1-6 will switch).

Log in as the root user.

Close any running Xorg session:

telinit 3

Generate a new Xorg configuration file:

xorgconfig

Follow the on screen prompts. You will have had the opportunity to test the new configuration.

When finished, replace your existing xorg.conf file with the new one. The file's location in the file system depends on your Linux distribution. Mine (Mandriva LInux 2009.0) is at
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Start the GUI (Xorg):

telinit 5

If all goes well, you should get to log with the graphical display manager. I use KDE so I log in using kdm.
