I have two computers running on my home. I own a 5-port hub. One computer is running Windows ME, the other is running Redhat 7.2. They are all connected on my hub. I have Rogers Hi-speed internet on my Windows computer. The problem is that I need to find an easy and safe way to configure my Linux box without losing my Windows connection. People have replied to me in other newsgroups saying that I have to let my Linux or my Windows machine as a gateway, but it risks losing my Windows internet connection. Also, people have replied to me to get a router, but I can't afford to get one. I've tried reading all the manuals, but it's all complicated. Even I've tried to install the ICS (internet connection sharing feature) on Windows, this will definitely lose my Windows internet connection. This is my big issue for almost 2.5 months now. What's your suggestion? If anyone can help, please let me know ASAP. Thank you.

Why is losing your internet connection a big deal
u have to lose it for a while so u could do some
of the setups

You should enable Internet sharing on the Win Me puter, it will set up DHCP on it too. Then tell you NIX puter to use DHCP. That is all. Uncle Bill will provide internet sharing to your NIX.
Want to do it the other way round? K, set up the internet connect on the NIX puter, then set it as a router or a proxy. Sounds complicate, I thought so. Good things take time. It does all the things called security. Do you need them?
Happy surfing!

Another option is you might need to contact your ISP and see if they have IP limits on their systems. If they do have IP limiting, this could be the reason why you can't have both computers hooked up to the hub at the same time. Usually your ISP will allow you to rent an additional IP addy for about $5 extra a month. My 2 cents, hope they help.

Hi Simon
Have you tried the 1st option I have suggested?
If you want the security things, go to redhat.com to read how to setup router, firewall and proxy. Heard of squid? Oh, I love seafood.

Go to your control panel, doublel-click on Add/Remove Programs, select Windows Setup, you should see the internet connection sharing there, put a tick in the box, click OK, that is it.
The help is in the OS. Click on Start/Help, and search for internet connection sharing, they will tell you everything.
