sorry if this is a double post:

I'm currently working on a hobby project of mine, and I need a little bit of help.

I give alot of time to a local childrens home in my area and they are looking to join the information age.

I want the children to be able to access 5 computers, and be able to communicate on the local network at all times. share files and printing and what not.

I planed on setting these 5 computers to static ips to.

192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.5

The problem I'm having is the internet. you see they must be supervised , by law, when they browse the internet. what i wanted was a server option that would lease a DNS to these computers for an hour via a gui interface, or command line if need be. also if there was a script option that would be acceptable .

As a charity organization spending money on something like this isnt possible, unless out of my own pocket. I'm a mostly a noob at linux but I choose it because its free.

What i would like is suggestions for:
reading material
websites
programs
anything else

in order to achieve this goal

as always you can explain in a reply.

Thank you ^_^

Set up a linux host with two NIC cards, dhcpd serving the internal network and squid for access control and proxy. Squid will control what computers can access what resources and at what times. It will also log all web access.

ok so I got dhcpd, bind, and squid installed. i also got them set up with webmin.

now for reading material? what do you suggest I could use to figure out how to make sense of all these new comfounded options haha.

now I know i may be asking for alot of work, but do you think there would be a way to GUI the leasing options? webmin looks like it will work, but it will be very complicated. I know the house parents wont be able to handle it. like something that has options like <1hr 2hr 3hr> lease times for each static ip, with the click of a button or a check box kinda thing.

so i could let kids on ip xxx.xxx.xxx.1 on for an hour, and the kid on xxx.xxx.xxx.2 for 3 , while the others don't have access to the internet.

You can set up webmin for users (called usermin) in which you can restrict what they can do and functions available. With a little playing around your should be able to create a relatively simple interface for them to use with just the functions in it you want them to access.
