i read the previous forum "Subject: Install/Partition Problem" but the info is not enough for me to solve the problem.

Help Needed.

hi!i'm one of the newbie start switching to linux, begin with redhat8.0. I also had the silmilar problem. The following is my conditions:
1) Partition two FAT32 c:(15BG), d:(20GB), also already leave unformatted free space(40GB) for the installation of redhat linux 8.0.

2)This is a brand new hard drive. I install os following the order: win2000,winXP, and redhat8.0

3)During the redhat installation process, i tried to use the "automatic partition"(there,i choosed the "keep all partition and use the existing free space"), but it didn't let me go through it, it showed me error. I had to go back, so i had to use the "manual partition with Disk Druid" :
Since two FAT32 partition which hold my win2000 and win XP already existed in hda1 and hda2, i tried to add new partition(and i think having 3 partion for linux should be essentian, my goal was to set a /boot partition, a / partition and a /swap partition. I tried to add new partition follow by hda4, hda5, hda6.

!!!!But the same error occur
Could not allocate requested partitions: partitioning failed
!!!!

after trying numbers of time,i gave up creating the /boot partition. Without it the Disk Druid let me go through the partition, and install process. Then everything go smooth, i installed all 3 disc. The problem came when the screen prompt me( this happened at the end of installation process) to choose from 3 option to intall either "Documentation"(put cd), "Program"(put cd), and..

So, i put in the documentation cd and click install, when the install start, it freeze there,"hang!" .(i just guess that perhaps without a /boot partition my linux os become not stable, is it true???)

But i still can stop( kill the application and finish the installation).

after this i tried numbers of time to reboot delete the linux partition start all over again , the same problem still happen again and again.

The Disk Druid let me go through when i gave up creating the new /boot partition, and finished the installation.

Looking forward for help.

Pleaeseeee

thank you very much !

cpu PIII 1.2Ghz
RAM 256MB
my motherboard is intel 815EEA2(it seems compatiblel)

Dear Joseph, this might not help but you need to allocate over 150 mb on one of the native partitions and add the cursor(/) to one of the partitions ,its called a root one of the partitions must also be a swap partition.
Sorry if this does not help:but cursor (/) must be at the start of the line and can consist of a directory name like USR which includes a windows directory, fenetres E.T.C.
