Hi. I have SuSE Linux 7.3. I want to know if anyone is aware of a utility to defrag the hard disk with Linux on it. I am learning Linux after being a Windows user
who is used to regular disk defragging. Please don't tell me Linux is so efficient I don't need to defrag...I am asking if anyone KNOWS about a defrag utility for Linux...that is the answer I am looking for.
Thanks. Jim

hate to break it to ya jim but simple enough linux dosen't need a defrag. hence there are no defrag utilities for linux. it is one of the reason linux is more stable then a Microsoft OS. But I guess if you want hours and hours of non productivity by defragging because you don't believe me you can just switch to windows and waste time

OK,
I won't tell you that the ext2 filesystem rarely, if ever, needs defragging.
What I will tell you instead is that the name of the utility is "e2defrag". I will also tell you that it has been known to do more harm than good, so use it at your own risk.

Jim,
I've seen a couple of defrag utilities for
various Linux distributions. However, I
have yet to use one. Most of what I have
found came from using the search string
"defrag linux" or "defrag ext3" or similar
on yahoo.com. Also, check out this link,
