Together, Deb & Slack have an installed base of ( 1/59000 ) serious conputer users. This means that at the joint Christmas dinner ( Chez Pauls @ Rodeo/Wilshire ) you will have no problem getting a table. MESSAGE: ... time, it's a terrible thing to waste.

Slackware and Debian are both more UNIX-like, less bloated, and more stable than other distributions like Mandrake or RedHat.
I've never used Debian, but I know its main advantage is the package system, which makes it really easy to install most software. I've always had good results with Slackware, and the only reason I'm not using it now is because I like Gentoo for speed and current versions of software.
Use either Debian or Slackware if you want to learn Linux properly. It's more difficult, of course, but I think it's worth it in the end.
