Ok igot samba installed via apt-get install samba samba-client It states in this book i have (a debian book) that this should install files neccassary for samba server and client. It states the samba-client will let you access files on a windows machine however i want to do vice versa windows to my unix machine. I setup the smb.conf file located in etc/samba if needed i can email you the file if needed and created a new user. But does anyone have experience using smb.conf i need to edit it so i can access my unix machine from windows with a username and pass come to think of it i made a new account but i dont know how to associate the new user account with samba. Well ok i got my unix box to show up on windows xp box i double click it and it ask for username and password i supply the root the new account i made and just nothing works what would i have to do to get it to work?

Err, you don't do it that way. You have many errors in your statement.

You don't allow remote access to root. You don't use root as a remote authentication.

You don't access a "Linux" box with samba if you are an admin. You would connect with ssh or sftp.

You might have a user that has smb access to a users directory. Access that with user name and password.

Yes i agreei need to edit my smb.conf for sure any suggestions i mean i can create different shares within this right? Any which way i tried to place a file on the unix box from my windows when the share allowed me into the unix box and it said i dont have permissions to put stuff on there. How do i fix this?

Kind of hard to explain. Users and other objects and programs could be granted access to samba shares. Each object that has network access might be allowed share access. The key is network usually. I say that because some installs get more secure by policy and dis-allow network access. (used to be wide open for everybody and everything until crooks started stealing)

You still don't have a unix box by the way.

We use "putty" and putty portable ssh program in windows and exceed. I'm sure and x server would do. I'm sure there are exact how to's on that.

I know there are how to's already. I was trying to find a good one. I'll keep looking.

Thank You, You are looking for like tutorials on how to setup SSH? Or perhaps your saying you can do SSH through Samba? Im very new to all of this :) How about can i implment certificates through Samba also ? Instead of logining in i could just have my certificate on my windows box that allows me access to my linux box? And you stated unix why would i go this route? I mean here at work i can get into unix i know nothing about it however :) but correct me if im wrong but im just trying to learn at a slower rate :) but i was told to work with Debian becuase it is very closely related to Unix, is unix distro free?

I assumed that you wanted to run x across ssh.

Unix is a very special OS. You do not have any version of unix. The only current versions that I know of are Solaris, AIX, HP and IRIX. Might be a sco.

If you want true unix or as close to true unix then consider solaris or opensolaris.
