i have decided to try debian stable as a replacment for good old slack but how many of the cd's do i really need for an install of a basic workstation with x (yes yes i know no need to tell me it won't run kde or gnome)

with debian you only need the first cd, the rest you can apt-get later.
and you can run gnome and kde on debian stable, its just that debian stable runs gnome 1.2 which needed the love that it got later on.
i would recommend going with testing (sarge) for a workstation. its going to be stable enough, the install will be easier, the support is better, x works faster with a 2.6 kernel, and it will install some variant of gnome 2.x.
