Comment:

I need to install a data server (on debian) that will be just for data. but it needs to be accessed by windows clients in the network.

this server will be registered in the school network as myserver.myschool.edu.
Will it be easy to install samba (new to it) and let other computers connect to the data directory?

what ports shall I use? and other things should I consider?
Thanks in advance!

D

The ports to use are the standard windoze
smb ports (139 etc) and I don't think you
really want to change them.

Installing samba is pretty easy, all the
configuration is done through
/etc/samba/smb.conf which is usually well
commented and easy to follow.
