Did you read any of the information available on the DSL website? It looks like the answers to most of your questions are right there.

You can apparently run DLS within windows using a USB thumb drive. Or, you could just boot from the live cd. If all you want to do is "try it out", I'd recommend starting with that. No need to install anything.

Go to ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/damnsmall/current/
and download dsl-0.9.1-syslinux.iso

Burn that to a CD. (make sure to tell your burning software that you want to burn an ISO image, it's a little different than normal burning. Just look around for options that let you burn .iso files...)

Once it's burned, you should be able to browse the CD and see the actual Linux files. (If all you see is one file called dsl-0.9.1-syslinux.iso, then you burned it wrong. IF you see sub-directories like /etc and /usr and /root, then you did it right).

Once you have a good CD, put it in your computer and reboot, telling your computer to boot off the CD. Then you're trying out DSL!

If that's too complicated, buy the pre-made CD from the web site.

You can also buy the pre-made USB drive, and you'll be able to try it out under Windows without rebooting.

Good luck.

lol what is he doing wanting to install DSL? Also should he try knoppix (www.knoppix.org) instead, DSL isn't really for newbies, too small, not enough apps, GUI tools, dontcha think?
