CVS Install Problem

We have installed CVS software version control system into a SuSE 7.3 system. It is supposed to support password-protection but we just can't seem to get this feature to work.
The instructions tell us to use the following line command to log into CVS:

1. cvs -d :pserver:admin@[server name]:/src/master/ccvs/doc login

2. Then it responds with a prompt for the password:
"CVS password:"

3. But when we type in the correct password, it just responds with the following failure message (we get this same message no matter if we try this command from within the admin account on the server where CVS was installed or from a remove client machine):
"cvs login: authorization failed: server [server name] rejected access to /src/master/ccvs/doc for user admin"

So we are very baffled at this point as to how to proceed in troubleshooting this or in understanding what needs to be done to correct this.

Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts on how to get beyond this issue or other things to try so as to isolate the problem? I'm not sure if this is a Linux problem or a CVS problem? (Anyone know how to tell?)

Should I just try reinstall? Does anyone know of a good install document for CVS? (I've found several -- not exactly sure which to use?)

Sorry guys, I'm very new to Linux/Unix so please do not assume that I know much! =)

Thanks very much for any help anyone can provide!

P.S., Are there other forums that would be better or more appropriate to post a question such as this?

Hi Steve,

I've got the same problem with a Tru64 unix install with C2 security enabled. CVS doesn't even seem to be hitting the security subsystem at all as the logs for failed attempts are empty. I've checked permissions in dirs, files for spaces, paths, passwords, etc and it all looks fine to me.

CVS functions normally I just cannot get pserver to authenticate anyone inbound.

Did you manage to solve the problem and would you pass the solution on ?
