here is the very old post http://www.computing.net/answers/li...
seems like ubuntu did nothing for last 5 years to solve the problem or it is the usual pain every linux beginner encounter for simply they do not know the easy "magic"? my very much windows friendly and working creative microphone is not working when I am using it in ubuntu. any solution?
thanks a lot!

I'm using the Gnome DE (desktop environment)
From the Applications menu I chose
Sound & Video
Sound recorderFrom there , and the menu bar at the top
File
Volume controlNext we'll add a few things
Edit
Preferencesselect and checkmark
Microphone
Microphone capture
Mic Boost ( +20dB )
Mic SelectNow in the " Switches " tab select and checkmark the " mic boost "
be sure there are no red x's at the bottom of the Volume controls,,,
Should now be able to record from the Mic,,,
MSI 845e mb 1 gb ram and a p4 2.4n running fedora 7 xp ,win 2000 advanced server and win 98 SE alot to learn and I know so little !!!!

P.S. Forgot also to mention, to also check the volume levels and make sure that they were also above 0 ,,, so that the recording could then be saved to a file and listened to later,,,,

When you open ,, " Sound Recorder " on the bar with , record from input , can you select " Microphone " ?
What Desktop Environment are you Using?
Do you have sound, is your sound card Working ?
Do you have alsa utils installed and gnome-sound-recorder?
