Is there a way that I could get the serial number of the CPU or hard disk(much like the volume serial number in windows)?

If yes, then how?
If no, is there any alternative info that identifies the cpu/hard disk? I'm looking far more than the model of cpu/hard disk.

I saw this file /proc/stat
It contains a numeric value across the cpu field. What does this numeric value mean? Can I use this to identify a cpu? Do all installations of linux have this file???

thanks a lot
