Hello,
When i start linux, the cpu fan (i think) doesn't spin
down like it does when i start XP. Please help,
how do I fix this noise problem, sounds like the
computer is about to take off. My computer is a
sony vaio rx671.Thanks

Sounds like XP had some sort of power management that would allow it to tell your motherboard to minimize the fan speed until it needed it again. Linux offers some power management but i dont know if it will interface with your motherboard like XP did. You may want to try a couple of different things.
1. Do a search somewhere (Sony's site, your Linux Distro's site) for your computer model, see if anyone has had the same problem or if Sony supports anything like that (i doubt it).
2. The easiest way would probably be to buy a different 'quieter' cooling fan and just hook it up to your power supply so it runs all of the time. Its not the most technical solution but fans are cheap and so am I.Hope this helps, if not email me

no this is not the only thing u can do. investigate in acpi...this is the term to serach for when ure searching for power management. there are several linux kernel patches that enable acpi for linux. if u are absolutely unable to find a solution mail me at brezel@chello.at

Hi traketo
Did you actually see that the fan is not spinning by physically opening the box? I have a sony vaio RX755 and I had no such problem with the fan.

HI,
I have the same problem on my machine (rx572). I know you can use vmware. But this is not a good solution.
