okay so if you don't run x and a gui you get a command prompt correct?

commands? You mean the name of the binaries that are present in /bin /sbin /usr/bin and /usr/sbin ????

At a console, press TAB twice in quick
succession to get a rough list of command
available to you. (use
shift&[pageup/pagedown] to scroll the
console window up and down.

$ command --help
often shows brief usage

$ man command
will display the manual page for a command

$ info command
will display the info page if available

$ apropos subject
will list command associated with that
subject.
