Here is the basic question, how do you connect a Linux box to Windows File Shares? I have Mandrake 8.1 and I want to connect thru ethernet cable to the other room. I am a newbie and would appreciate any links or just tips to doing this. Thanks for the help.

I don't know if 8.1 installs samba by default, but I know that you can try using Gnomba if you use the Gnome WM. Otherwise you can mount the network share with the following command, assuming samba is installed: smbmount //Servername/sharename /mountpoint. Make sure the mount point exists !!!!! I use /network/sharename as a mount point, but you can use whatever.

I install Mandrake 8.1, trying to see
windows shares (windows box can see linux
no prob), tried all the things stated
here...

everytime (actually, can't cut and paste
either, so i cant show you), but anyway, it
says in the log files samba is running, but
none of the commmands listed here, are
found. I am logged in as the "su", seems
that makes a difference sometimes...

linux.... sheesh....

what do you have to do, re-compile the
kernel every night b4 u go to bed?

I'm having the same problem as above. I can connect Windows to Linux and move files. I can also see the shares on the Windows box if I use the command line in Linux but can't move files.
I can't browse the lan using Konqueror. I get the message " can't find localhost.localdomain.
I looked everywhere I could think of and made changes to my /etc/hosts/ and lmhosts file. All that did was to keep Swat from working.
I'll figure it out eventually just want to see if anyone else might have a quick answer.

see the address bar of konqueror when you click on network.
It shows lan://localhost --right ?
Just change this to :
lan:/localhost
everything will be fine, you can see SMB folder.Browse through it.Don't forget to set up Lisa.
Have fun!!
