I have mandrake Linux 9.2 and i connected to my ISP with the following konsole commands and i suppose it should work for you too (for this you have to go to the console and then be a root user).

1) ifconfig eth0 down
2) ifconfig eth0 broadcast [your IP address] netmask 255.255.255.0
3) ifconfig eth0 up
4) route add -net default gw [your ISP's gateway address here] netmask 0.0.0.0 metric 1
that is all ..
i was able to connect to my ISP thru these simple steps and also by the client LOGIN Software provided by the ISP.

FYI Your DNS servers go in /etc/resolv.conf, eg:

search .
nameserver 158.43.240.3
nameserver 158.43.240.4

There are simpler steps than the above that i earlier mentioned :

1) ifconfig eth0 down
2) ifconfig eth0 [your IP Address here]
3) ifconfig eth0 up
4) route add default gw [your ISP's IP Address here or the Default Gateway Address here]
That is it
