HI, I hope you guys can help me.
I have SpeedStream 5360 ADSL Modem and I am trying to connect to my provider, but I have no luck. I tried using TkPPPoE, ADSL-Setup, NetworkSetup from RedHat, and nothing worked. The Ethetrnet Card seem to connect to the DSL modem couze the light i sflashing but I cant dial to my provider. I get error message like Can not connect, time out or something like that.
Sorry I did not write down the exact error message.
Does anyone have the same modem?
Any suggestions?Thanks

first make sure your ethernet card is configured, do this with ifconfig if its not read the networking how-to... then get Roaring Penguin PPPoE.. do a search for PPPoE on google to get the site. it is a simplke install and will ask you questions at the end just make sure the interface it ask for is the one you have the nic card on.

Yes I already did that. I downloaded and istalled the Roaring Penguin and I still get the same "Time Out - can not connect " message.
I dont know what to do. I am thinking about ordering the Linksys BFSR41 router, couze than I can setup DHCP network, so I dont have to deal with the modem.
But if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this issue, tell me.
Thanks

ha. setting up a router may be even more frustrating. tkpppoe, i believe, is a just a graphical front end. you have to be logged in as root or just type:
su -c "tkpppoe"
i assume you are an ameritech dsl customer, make sure it receives all DNS date from the server, don't use any of the firewall options. make sure the modem has detected a dsl frequency before you connect. this may take sometime. i use a westell wirespeed and it blinks for about 30 seconds maybe before i can connect. make sure you have it assigned to the correct ethernet card.

Yeah , I checked all that. Modem is powerd up and the light stoped blinking so I asume there is a connection to the server and to my ethernet card. but when I try to dail in I cannot connect.
This thing is rally making me angry.I am loged in as root, and I have asigned a proper interface to the modem.
I dont get it. Why do they have to make it so complicated.

I have similar problem to yours. Then when I ran
route -n
I saw that the default route (destination 0.0.0.0) is pointed to my ADSL modem (Aztech Turbo900). Apparently the Aztech ADSL modem responds to DHCP and gives 192.168.1.1 (i.e the Aztech modem itself) as the default router. Maybe your ADSL modem is doing the same thing.Run route -n (before starting PPPoE, of course), and check that default route is not there. If it is, then, you should delete it. On my RH system:
route del -net 0.0.0.0/0 gw 192.168.1.1
Then start the PPPoE connection. Check the routing table again just to make sure that the default route is going through the PPPoE connection.Hope this helps.
