People tell me to type in commands to mount devices, or install, or unzip a file,...etc. I have no idea where to type these commands. Is there a command prompt? I am very new to LINUX.

You type them at the command line. Normally, this will either be at the console (if you are not using a gui) or in a "Terminal Emulator" in a graphical environment. Examples of the latter are Xterm, rxvt, Konsole or Gnome-terminal.
I suggest you pick up a book on Linux, or at least look for some of the linux for newbies websites out there (for example, http://www.linuxnewbie.org/)
