After installing Linux, my PCI C-Media 8738 distorts badly in the right-hand channel only. I know this is nothing to with the hardware or speaker system, and therefore suspect the driver.
The installation set up what I assume is a generic C-Media driver. I have a Linux driver for the 2.4.x kernel. (I think Fedora Core 2 is something like 2.6.?, but it didn´t seem to bother the 2.4.x modem driver I am using now)
I´ve extracted the driver archive and attempted to install it, but get nothing but errors. I understand you need to compile the driver and insert it as a module into the kernel or something like that. (I managed the modem with the help of a friend)
Could somebody please lay out the process of installing a device driver as a set of console commands? I´m new to linux, so please expain things clearly.
Thanks.
Regards
Jethro
