changing from KDE to GNOME

how do you change your GUI from say KDE to GNOME in the command prompt in linux. How can i adjust the settings without being in the Graphical user interface. I cant get into my GUI. Linux gets stuck in a loop when it tries to load KDE. so I want to change to GNOME.

At least you can boot it into a command line -single mode, then vi and # the last line regarding X in /etc/inittab. So linux will not try to start GUi when boot up. You can start to look from there, for example Xcon.. . - I don't know...
