If you don't have any important files or programs it's very easy to install ubuntu. Download the image from their site, burn it to a CD (you should have a burning tool i guess), put it in the drive, reboot and follow the recommended install steps. If you can't download it or burn it to a CD you can order a free Ubunu CD from thier site as well.

But bare in mind that Ubuntu will take about 4wks to get it to you. Does the version of linux you have not contain a synaptic manager or something like that? If not you can still probably use the command line to get just about anything you need. And there are ways to download things to use as well.

I guess big linux distros are not suitable for your hardware condition. It will run but very slow. I think, just try first puppy linux live cd (~90Mb) , you dont need a HD installation. Run very fast. HD installation is the best, if you like it. Have fun!

just installed mint 6, on a compaq evo laptop with a p3 1gig & 384 of ram. runs fine even playing dvd's. create a swap partition. also installed, today on a gateway laptop with a 1.7 pentium & 512 of ram, even the wireless is working. successfully re-partitioned without losing the already existing XP install, suggest you try the same with you current linux install on your acer, if the drive is big enough. This one is only 40 gigs.
