Change computer name

How do you change the name of the computer.. I'm able to do hostname = whatever, but when I reboot it goes back to localhost...

Edit /etc/hosts, the loopback interface is your own system.

You also want to edit /etc/HOSTNAME before rebooting. The system usually sets the hostname at boot time when starting networking (eg by running /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1, /etc/init.d/boot etc) which in turn takes the name from the file /etc/HOSTNAME. I think under redhat you might want to check /etc/sysconfig/network too....

I'm attempting to do the same, change the name of my machine, as simply as possible from localhost to something else. I'm running Mandrake 9.2 on i586. I've checked and don't seem to have a file called "/etc/HOSTNAME.
Any suggestions how to get this done with M-9.2? If I create this file with that work? If so what might I put in it?
