i'm using Ubuntu 8.04 and I can't turn off the computer from the shut down screen. The hard drive stops spinning but the desk top tower stays powered up along with the monitor which is showing the Unbuntu logo on it.
Any ideas on how to correct this problem?
Thanks

in the Bios post , your bios version,
If it's older than 2000 , the newer linux Kernels don't (exactly) support the ACPI
you should however get to a screen where the power button will shut it off, The alternative is to look for the latest bios update for your motherboard, and flash the bios,
MSI 845e mb 1 gb ram and a p4 2.4n running fedora 7 xp ,win 2000 advanced server and win 98 SE alot to learn and I know so little !!!!

If I'm right, ???
you may also be able to set a boot option for no ACPI , by editing a file ( not sure which one ) or editing for force ACPI ,,, would have to look into it a little further,,, as to the results that this achieves,,,,
I still just believe that ( depending on the cpu speed & amount of ram, ) the best option is to find a bios version that is the year 2000 or newer
