Hello all, just moved to Linux on a Dell Latitude C840.
I installed Slackware normally and have gotten my internet, network, sound, printer, graphics etc. working.
But some programs I try to start will take about 10-20 seconds to load and nothing will come up. I'm using GNOME On X.
Also when I start up X-Windows, i get the following error:
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.
The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.
The last error message was:
Child process did not give an error message, unknown failure occurred
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.
*********
Does anyone know what this is about and how I can fix both of these problems?
Thank you so much...
BRANDON.

Try launching programs from an xterm....it should then return an error to help find out what the problem is. You can decrease the starting time for applications by using prelink. There may be several reasons why your gnome settings daemon is failing:
