I have a Slackware linux machine, along with several windows machines connected to a Linksys 4 port router/switch using DHCP. The windows machines are using either Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
My Slackware linux machine is set to use DHCP, and the resolv.conf file is generated automatically. I can access the internet with no problems, but I can only access within the LAN by IP address.
The strange thing with my setup is that the Windows machines can reference both my linux machine and the other windows machines by their hostnames on the LAN. My linux machine can't resolve the windows hostnames or even its own hostname. All of the hostnames are registered in the linksys router DHCP table.
Does anybody know how the Windows machines do this? I don't believe there is a DNS server for the local hostnames on the Linksys router.
Also, I can't just set the /etc/hosts file manually because I need to use DHCP for laptops/etc.
Thanks.
Ryan
