I have installed Mandrake 8.0 on my small network. I set the default gateway and DNS addresses. The machine can see the local network, but it can't reach the Internet. It's able to ping the default gateway and everything seems to be set up correctly in Linuxconf. What should I look for next?
Thanks,
Steve

Not able to reach or not able to resolve???
Did you set the gateway ip in NIC config?
Take a look the the routing table.ping something to make sure it really cannot reach the net. if it work, take a look to the file /etc/resolv.conf

Thanks Danny. Still no luck though. I can ping the default gateway, but can't hit the DNS servers (which are outside of our network). Can't ping any external addresses either. The resolv.conf file looks fine as does the hosts file. Any ideas what to do next?

To ping an IP address does'nt need resolv.conf. It's a good thing that you could ping the gateway. You may proceed this way :
* From the gateway itself can you hit outside
* Try to execute the traceroute command from your station (tracert if Win9X)
traceroute dns_ip
this will show you the point where the packet is not forwarded.
* Check also if any packet filter is installed (Firewall, Router, Proxy, ...)If this doesn't help, you may give me the routing tables from your station till the last gateway before the outside net.
Good luck

RU using a proxy server to access the Internet? If so, enter the gateway/proxy server IP address in your Browser Preferences.
Edit
proxy 192.168.1.2 port 8080 If this don't work. Check your NIC card for for driver updates, some ONBOARD NIC's don't
work. Sure you maybe able to ping your network. try telneting some like yahoo.com.
