I have just installed RedHat Linux 9.0 It was a custome installation. I didn't install "X-Windows" or something like that. My problem is I cant play .mp3 .mpeg .mpg .dat .vob .avi files. When I double click it, it says "Nautilus has not installed a viewer for this file". Again When I double clicked the .mp3 files A dialog box appeared and says that RedHat can't play mpeg 1/2/3 layer files, or it doesnt' have had the licence issued.

tell me how can I play those files.
please.

fine computing !

Using your package manager, add/install the xmms for playing mp3's, and xine for playing videos.

X windows is the graphical display, without this all you would see is a black/white text when you login, so it sounds like you have got X installed.

Redhat does not ship with mp3 support due to licensing reasons. You can download the latest version from www.xmms.org or a patch from somewhere like http://dag.wieers.com/packages/xmms-mp3/

Does redhat not come with xine? It should be on one of the installation CDs. If not you can download it from here:
http://xinehq.de/

NB mplayer is also very good:

hi friends
for redhat 9, the xmms does not come with the input pluggin for playing mp3. it needs this pluggin libmpg123.so. download it and paste it in the /usr/share/xmms/input folder. launch your xmms, go to prefence and make the input pluggin libmpg123.so.you might have to chose another output pluggin for better performance.

HI,
The best solution to your problem will be installing "mplayer" in your system. It is a damn good player with a support for a wide range of audio and video files. Just go through the following steps and have fun.

Step 1:
Visit www.icewalkers.com/Linux/Software/515490/mplayer.html
and download mplayer.

Step 2:
Extract the files.

Step 3:
Move to the folder where you extracted the files in step 2 and write the command
./configure --enable-gui

Step 4:
Write the command
make

Step 5:
Write the command
make install

Step 6:
Now you are ready to play any video or audio file. To do this just type the command
mplayer filename

for example
mplayer /home/rick/MichaelJackson.dat

Still not satisfied? OK, mplayer offers you some great gui with some exciting range of skins. To run mplyer in gui mode you need to perform following steps.

Step 7:
Download a few mplayer skins from
www.usinglinux.org/multimedia/mplayer-skins.html

Step 8:
Extract the skins.

Step 9:
Copy the skins to mplayer's skins directory (Find out the skins directories by typing the command gmplayer. It will give you a list of skin directories it searches for skins)

Step 10:
Write the command
gmplayer -skin skin_name

Something like
gmplayer -skin Blue
gmplayer -skin Plastic
etc.

You will find the magical gui of mplayer coming up. Play with it. Have fun.
