I installed a RedHat 8.0, but I can't ping the network. I used a static address 192.168.1.85 mask 255.255.255.0. Connected the linux box to a switch and tried to ping a windows box with ip 192.168.1.46.

do you have a DHCP server running? if so, try setting your linux box to obtain an ip address. if not, make sure your drivers for the nic are installed correctly.

I have a windows DHCP server running. But the static ip I assigned for the Linux box doesn't fall under the DHCP scope.
The drivers are correct, unless there is something wrong. My NIC is a 3c595
