Comment:

just installed latest version of suse from an ISO image, and when it boots up i cant figure out how to get into the GUI. i log in as root, and then i cant get into the KDE gui. ive tried typing startx and just get error messages, and ive tried typing kde and the same happens. it says something about not being able to find the xserver or something.
also when i go into yast it seems to not let me edit many things and i think it crashed earlier i had to restart. any ideas?

What errors are you getting when you attempt to start x-windows, ie use the startx command?

Have you tried reconfiguring X using yast? Examining /var/log/XFree86.0.log may help too...

OK, when you first installed SUSE, did it install with the graphical mouse-driven interface, or did it force you to use the text one? If it forced you to use the text one, it could mean (stress "could") that SUSE can't use your video hardware. However, with an Athlon 2800XP, you've probably got a nice graphics card along with it, so that's probably not the case.

Possible things to try:
If you had to install with the text interface, try reinstalling and leaving all of the settings alone.
If you're getting a "screens found, but none configured" or some such error, run "yast" as the superuser and follow the instructions, trying to leave all settings as default as possible.

If yast isn't letting you change things, you might not be super user. Enter the command "su" followed by the root password. Then enter "yast" and follow the instructions.

You can also post the /var/log/XFree86.0.log here too if you want (or just the part with the error).

Those error messages are coming from KDE saying that it can't connect to your X server. X is the part that provides a way for window managers (like KDE and gnome) to display graphics. Without X running you wont be able to start KDE.

What are the errors you get when typing startx? Are you able to complete the X setup in yast?

right
just gone into YAST and had problems once again. it wont let me set up hardly anything.
one of the few things i can load by pressin enter is the hardware information or watever its called. however when i do this i get the error messages across the top of the screen, "port 'installation' faled"
Import 'HW Status' failed'
its a similar story if i try to go into boot loader config, i get similar messages, but with "Import 'storage' failed" at the end of it.
I can't access monitor and graphics card settings. i dont know how else to set up the X server.

yes i can only get on by typing root as it doesnt allow me to config any users. i presume it allows you to do this after it reboots but there is my problem, thats as far as i can get.
it finalises the install but never gets to config
