Hello Everyone,
I have a multiboot system with the OS's Windows 98SE/2000, and Linux 8.0. My modem is an Actiontec PCI Call Waiting Modem that is compatable with Linux but I cannot get it to connecet to my ISP. It dials but will not get me connected. The modem is working, understand that, but what's wrong with my connection. I've tried using different dial-up programs that come with Linux with no luck. I have contacted technical support for my modem and they told me how to set up the modem to work, but it already does work, it just won't get me connected and logged on to my ISP. It will dial and say connected but then disconnects and dials again and again. My ISP doesn't know anything about connecting to Linux. I could try Red Hats technical support but I havent registered yet. I'd like to try to work out some of the problems myself first before I really need help because they only give you limited time on support. Well, I've gone on long enough, so if there's anyone that can help me PLEASE DO!!!. I'll be forever greatful.
Thanks,
Larry L

Could you send me the output of "tail /var/log/messages" after you try dialing? Then maybe I can help you...

Yea, that's a great start...... It kinda helps to open up a terminal and type
tail -f /var/log/messgaes
Think that's the right command. That way you can see exactally what is happening as it's dialing.... I hate to ask a really stupid question, but this SAME exact thing happened to me before. Same exact thing..... Double check to make sure your access number is correct. I had my last number wrong.... I must have been dialing someones home number or something.... Check to make sure you have the right primary and secondary DNS numbers from your ISP as well. They will give those to you.... Good luck
Jon

Hi Balram and Jong,
I want to thank both of you for your response. I responded to both of you via your e-mail addresses, don't know if you got them or not? Balram, I sent you the "messages" file you requested, were you able to make anything of it? And Jong, thank you for your response, I did check my phone # and my modem is dialing into my ISP but it just won't establish a connection. I am still working on this problem, and now I have another one. I re-ran setup for Windows 98SE and it rewrote my MBR and now I don't have GRUB on my hard drive to load my OS's. I did create a boot disk so I can still boot into Linux, but there is a way to restore the GRUB or LILO boot loaders isn't there? Can either of you help me or should I make a new post in the forum?
Thanks again to both of you,
Larry L

i dboot w2k and rh8, i also use that modem. no problems, smooth as silk.
first, when you installed rh8 did you install the server connections, you need that otherwise you cannot set up your dialup.
second, after the server connections packages are installed, go to the rh8 menu and use the internet configuration wizard to set up the account, you will need isp phone #,etc. when you finish that apply the connection and activate it, it will dial and connect you. if you have a network card make sure you select the ppp0 connection to activate.
third, put the network device control icon on your panel, that way its easy to access when you want to connect, and don't forget to deactivate when you are through with the internet.
