Comment:

I have Windows XP Pro on HewlettPackard Compaq desktop PC. I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a separate HDD (internal drive D, retrofitted). During installation i was asked where to intall boot loader and i selected "drive C" where XP currently is.

Now when I turn on the PC, I have to select between
a)Ubuntu
b)Ubuntu (restore mode)
c)Windows XP

Problem: If I select XP , it again asks which one to boot, over and over (loop).

On contrary, both "Ubuntu" and "Ubuntu (restore mode)" boot with no problem.

Please share your expertise if you have had similar problem.
Thank You!

Don't know how many time linux has borked my MS install. From Dos to W7 it has not changed.

I try to tell people to use a virtual machine and not bork their MS.

What you want to do is either fix the grub to point to the correct MS install. If it is pointed correctly you may have to fix some boot issue with xp. On very odd situations you could have has the boot files on one partition and seeming had xp on C:. Which was D because of bios boot order or raid or other issu.

The other way is to drop ubuntu, fix xp with the original xp cd using fixboot or fixmbr. then run virtual machine.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

Thank You jefro for your reply.
I will try to implement your suggestions right away. It will take some time as I am not familiar with some terms, such as "virtual machine", "grub", "raid", etc.
but with these hints on hand it is going to be an enjoyable learning :)
Thank You!

rizkiyev, another alternative is to use wubi to install ubuntu.

You may experience a small performance hit, regarding disk access, but this is certainly offset by not having the hassle of partitioning hard drives.

Ravey Dave,
Thank You for advice. I wish I knew about wubi a bit earlier. I will consider this option, in case if I can't fix the grub and scrap&build everything.

Thanks a lot, everyone, my problem is fixed now !
What I did is "The other way is to drop ubuntu, fix xp with the original xp cd using fixboot or fixmbr." (by jefro).
Next time I will install ubuntu on a USB drive.

When i has startet to install ubuntu 9.04 it has begined with the 7 steps . When it has startet with the partitions you must selected the space that windows use . Ubuntu has deleted some files from windows and thats the reasent why its not starts .

You must reinstall windows and make locale disc for ubuntu .

If you use manual when installing Ubuntu, it will allow you to put Linux(including the swap partition) on the separate HDD. If you then choose the advanced option, you can install the Ubuntu boot laoder(GRUB) on the separate HDD as well. That way linux will not interfere with the Windows XP boot loader. I just learned how to do this myself and it worked well.

yes, wubi does a nice install, the only problem was it left me with 55% fragmentation and neither my windows defragmenter or Defraggler could do nothing with it.
